Terrain put up in double DQ

Marcus Hersh|Sep 13, 2008

In a wild finish to Saturday's Grade 3, $200,000 Arlington-Washington Futurity at Arlington Park, Jose Adan rallied to nip Advice. But things were just getting interesting. When the smoke in the stewards' stand had cleared, both Jose Adan and Advice had been disqualified, with third-place finisher Terrain awarded the win.

The trouble began at about the eighth pole. Advice had stalked pacesetting Malibu Maverick's fractions of 22.79 seconds to the quarter and 46.25 for the opening half before taking the lead after turning for home. But Advice and Rene Douglas drifted out at about the eighth pole, causing a chain reaction that affected three horses to his outside. One of them was Jose Adan, who was rallying widest at the time, but Terrain took the worst of it, with Jamie Theriot checking. But then, Jose Adan and Brandon Meier drifted in after taking the lead; Terrain got fouled again about 50 yards from the wire.

First the objection light flashed, then the inquiry - and about 15 minutes later, the double disqualification was announced. Advice was placed behind Terrain, and then Jose Adan was placed behind Terrain, moving Advice to third. Terrain had been taken back to his stall, and both Jose Adan and Advice - being led around in front of the winner's circle while the stewards rendered their decision - were led away with no trophy.

Trained by Al Stall for Adele Dilschneider, Terrain ($18.20) ran his career record to 3 for 3. Jose Adan was timed in 1:35.68 for one mile on Polytrack.

* Goat Cheese held off a late rally from favored Caprice and won the $54,200 Claire Marine Stakes by a neck. Scheduled for turf, the Claire Marine was contested at 1 1/2 miles on Polytrack because of rain.
