Terra Promessa targets Fantasy Stakes

Terra Promessa, who remained undefeated around two turns with her win in the Grade 3, $200,000 Honeybee on March 12 at Oaklawn, is being pointed for the Fantasy Stakes, said trainer Steve Asmussen. The Grade 3, $400,000 race for 3-year-old fillies will be run April 9 at Oaklawn.
Terra Promessa gave Asmussen his sixth win in the Honeybee. He also ran second in the race with Nickname.
“Very happy with how they came out of the Honeybee,” Asmussen said. “Both went back to the track nicely. I spoke with [Stonestreet Stables], and we are planning on pointing Terra Promessa toward the Fantasy.”
Plans are not yet finalized for Nickname.
W.B. Smudge points to Count Fleet
Oaklawn puts on its premier race for sprinters next month, and there will be a new face in the Grade 3, $400,000 Count Fleet Sprint Handicap on April 10. W.B. Smudge has put himself on the path to that race with his 2 3/4-length allowance win March 3 at Oaklawn, according to trainer Matt Kordenbrock. W.B. Smudge covered six furlongs in 1:09.73 and earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 99.
Kordenbrock, who is based in Kentucky, has brought a division of horses to Oaklawn for the first time this meet. W.B. Smudge ran third in the King Cotton Stakes here in January prior to his win March 3. Carlos Marquez Jr. was aboard for both races and has the mount in the Count Fleet, according to Kordenbrock.
Breeders’ Cup filly faces maidens
Ma Can Do It, who in her last start was fifth to Songbird in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, returns to the maiden ranks for the ninth race Sunday. The purse for the 1 1/16-mile race for 3-year-old fillies is $75,000.
Ma Can Do It arrived Thursday at Oaklawn aboard a flight that brought stablemate Cherry Wine for the Rebel Stakes and Upstart for the Razorback Handicap on Saturday. Dale Romans trains Ma Can Do It for Kyle Nagel and has given the mount to Chris Emigh.
◗ Super Saks is being pointed for the $100,000 Giant’s Causeway at 5 1/2 furlongs on grass April 16, said trainer D. Wayne Lukas. “She’s lethal on turf,” Lukas said of Super Saks, who is 2 for 3 on grass.
