DEL MAR, Calif. – Four starts into his California career, Tempus Volat has gone from a maiden race winner to a stakes winner. On Thursday, Tempus Volat recorded an upset win in the $101,000 Let It Ride Stakes at a mile on turf for 3-year-olds at Del Mar. The win in the restricted stakes led trainer Leonard Powell to say the Grade 1 Hollywood Derby at 1 1/8 miles on turf at Del Mar on Nov. 29 is under consideration. In the Let It Ride Stakes, Tempus Volat stalked pacesetter Friendly Confines while racing on the rail. Jockey Mirco Demuro moved Tempus Volat to the outside of Friendly Confines, the even-money favorite, in early stretch and caught that rival in the final sixteenth. Tempus Volat ($23.40) won by three-quarters of a length and was timed in 1:35.31. He earned a career-best Beyer Speed Figure of 86. "He got the split at the right time at the top of the stretch,” Powell said. ON SALE NOW: DRF Breeders' Cup Packages! Get everything you need to win and save big. Friendly Confines held second, holding off a late run from 5-1 Lyle the Crocodile. Hiding in Honduras, Bodi Zafa, Mescalero, and Geometry completed the order of finish. The Let It Ride Stakes was restricted to nonwinners of a stakes worth $60,000 or more to the winner at a mile or more, other than statebred races, since April 1. Tempus Volat, now owned by John Sondereker, was trained by Steve Asmussen earlier this year, finishing third and fourth in maiden races at Fair Grounds and Keeneland. At the time, Tempus Volat was owned by Three Chimneys Farm. Tempus Volat was bought by Sondereker for $180,000 at a Fasig-Tipton digital sale in May. Tempus Volat joined Powell’s stable in California in the summer and has not finished worse than third for his current team. Tempus Volat won a maiden race at a mile at Del Mar on Aug. 30 in his second start for Powell. He was then third in an allowance race at a mile on turf at Santa Anita on Oct. 3. “He came to me this summer, and he’s getting better and better,” Powell said. By Not This Time, Tempus Volat has won 2 of 6 starts and earned $142,058. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
