ELMONT, N.Y. – A field of eight marathon types was entered in the $200,000 Temperence Hill, to be run Sunday at Belmont, and the 1 5/8-mile race appears wide open.
Baccelo, who won the Grade 3 Iselin at Monmouth and was third in the Seattle Slew Stakes here, might rate slight favoritism if he runs. Trainer David Jacobson had mentioned that he was pointing Baccelo to the Grade 2 Kelso going a mile here next Saturday.
Melmich, a multiple stakes winner on the synthetic surface at Woodbine, won the Grade 3 Valedictory Stakes at 1 3/4 miles at Woodbine last November. He won his only start on dirt.
Three in the Temperence Hill earned a 92 Beyer Speed Figure in their last start: Doyouknowsomething, an allowance winner going 1 1/16 miles here on Sept. 11; Indycott, a recent winner of a $32,000 claimer; and Extinct Charm, the runner-up in the Albany Stakes at Saratoga.
Desvelo and Scuba complete the field.
