Temper Tantrum wins Richard Hazelton 8-7-2021
Coady Photography Temper Tantrum paid $10.60 in winning the Richard Hazelton Memorial at Arlington Park on Saturday.

Trainer Larry Rivelli swept the top three places and trainer Michele Boyce the top two in a pair of Illinois-bred stakes races Saturday at Arlington.

Rivelli-trained runners ran first, second, and third in the $75,000 Richard Hazelton Memorial Stakes, and it was 4-1 Temper Tantrum who out-finished 1-2 favorite Richiesgotgame in this one-mile grass race for 3-year-olds. The Rivelli-trained Valiant Vinny set the pace and held third, though well beaten by the top pair.

Richiesgotgame rallied steadily around the far turn and at the three-sixteenths pole was on even terms with Temper Tantrum, who had followed the pacesetter into the stretch, but jockey Chris Emigh stoked up Temper Tantrum, who got the better of the odds-on favorite and pulled away to win by about 1 1/4 lengths.

Temper Tantrum ran one mile on firm turf in 1:37.45 and paid $10.60 to win. Owned by Richard Ravin and Patricia's Hope, Temper Tantrum is a gelding by Flashback out of Cozzy Temper, by Cozzene, bred in Illinois by Ben Barnow. Hazelton, the legendary horseman for whom the race is named, used to train for Barnow.

In the $75,000 Sharon Kirby Memorial, a one-mile grass race for 3-year-old fillies, Katie M’Lady went to the lead under Julio Felix and turned away a mild bid from her Boyce-trained stablemate, Cat Attack, to win by about 2 1/2 lengths.

Cat Attack, the odds-on favorite, looked like the speed of the race from the rail, but it was Katie M’Lady, a hot-blooded, mercurial filly, who set out for the lead. “She has a mind of her own – about everything,” Boyce said. “She does what she wants to do.”

As Katie M’Lady went a half-mile in a tepid 49.03 seconds, Cat Attack was bottled up inside, failing to settle comfortably. She found room in upper stretch and made a brief bid, but Katie M’Lady had too much left and won going away. Beyond Proper, in an improved performance, just missed catching Cat Attack for second.

Katie M’Lady was timed in 1:37.57 and paid $8 to win. A homebred by Dominus, Katie M’Lady is owned by Cherrywood Racing and Black Rock Stables. Boyce trained her dam, the Lost Soldier mare Katie the Lady, as well as the second dam, Kate the Great.
