Tell Me Lies, Canaveral Leader meet again Wednesday
With three stakes wins each, Tell Me Lies and Canaveral Leader took turns beating each other and were the best 3-year-old fillies at Northlands Park last year. They will renew acquaintances in a $35,000 optional-claiming race that will serve as Wednesday’s feature.
The 6 1/2-furlong sprint drew six horses, but according to trainer Greg Tracy, Larissa’s Love will be withdrawn.
Tracy likes his chances with Tell Me Lies, who is coming off a distant second behind Saturday Nite Ride in a $35,000 optional-claiming race May 3. It was her first start this year, and Tracy is expecting the daughter of Captain Bodgit to move forward with a race behind her. Tracy is pointing Tell Me Lies to the fillies’ division of the $50,000 3 & 4-year-old Sales Stakes on July 1.
“She’s doing great,” Tracy said. “I wanted to get a race into her before the Sale Stakes, and I was glad this came up. If it didn’t fill, I was going to send her to Assiniboia Downs to run in a stakes there.”
Tell Me Lies used her good speed to win the Chariot Chaser, Sonoma, and Alberta Oaks last year.
Scott Williams rides.
Canaveral Leader won the Sales Stakes last year, and trainer Ron Grieves is expecting an improved performance Wednesday. In her first start this year, she finished third to Saturday Nite Ride in the $50,000 Wild Rose on May 17. Saturday Nite Ride cruised to an easy win in the John Patrick last Friday.
“I don’t need to see her for a while,” Grieves said of Saturday Nite Ride. “I was a little disappointed that Canaveral Leader got passed for second in the Wild Rose, but she’s doing okay, and this should set her up nicely for the Sales Stakes.”
Along with her win in the Sales Stakes, Canaveral Leader won the Northlands Oaks and beat older fillies and mares in the $56,000 Duchess of York in her final start as a sophomore.
Shannon Beauregard retains the mount.
Grieves also has entered Lynn’s Foxie Lady, who drew the outside post. The 4-year-old filly has decent speed but figures to have a hard time keeping up with Tell Me Lies early.
Ten Thirty, the only other 3-year-old filly to win a stakes at Northlands last year, will appreciate the easier company after chasing Saturday Nite Ride in the Wild Rose.
Yes It’s Jackie completes the field.
