Tell Cartel leads owner-trainer sweep in El Primero Del Ano Derby
Tell Cartel won his second six-figure race of 2020 in Sunday’s $213,300 El Primero Del Ano Derby at Los Alamitos, leading a sweep of the first three positions for owner Martha Wells and trainer Matt Fales.
Tell Cartel ($6.80) finished 1 3/4 lengths in front of 26-1 Old School Icon, who was a half-length in front of 40-1 Fire by Night, the longest shot in the field of 10.
Wells bred all three runners.

The race was marred by a fatal knee injury sustained by Flokie, who was pulled up with about 100 yards remaining while racing near the front.
Tell Cartel ran 400 yards in 19.47 seconds and was ridden by Ruben Lozano. By Favorite Cartel, Tell Cartel has won 6 of 13 starts and earned $252,902.
On Feb. 8, Tell Cartel won the $190,600 Los Alamitos Winter Derby in a 17-1 upset for his first major win.
