Tekton injured, out for season
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Trainer Tony Dutrow suffered his first significant setback of the meet when Tekton sustained a condylar fracture to his left hind leg on Monday. Tekton will be forced to miss Saturday’s Grade 1 King’s Bishop and the remainder of the year.
Tekton, runner-up in the Curlin Stakes on July 31, had a very sharp workout here on Monday, going four furlongs in 48.21 seconds over the Oklahoma training track. Dutrow, who has gone 5 for 14 at the meet, was looking forward to running him in the King’s Bishop.
Dutrow said Tekton would undergo surgery at the Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Ky. ,and he expects the horse to make it back to the races in 2016.
Meanwhile, the King’s Bishop picked up a potential starter when Kiaran McLaughlin said Tuesday that Watershed, a debut winner here on Aug. 7, would step right up into Grade 1 company.
“Normally I’d wait for the middle of September, but it’s a Grade 1, seven-eighths, here,” McLaughlin said. “The risk-reward factor is off the charts. It’s not something we do very often.”
Watershed, a son of Bernardini, rallied from eighth lengths back to win his debut by four lengths, running six furlongs in 1:09.44 and earning a Beyer Speed Figure of 95.
