Teddy's Barino starting over at age 4

Teddy’s Barino had a successful, but abbreviated, two-race season as a 3-year-old in 2021, winning a maiden race on turf and finishing second in her stakes debut on dirt.
Sunday at Santa Anita, Teddy’s Barino will have her 2022 debut, and fourth career start, in an allowance race for California-bred fillies and mares at about 6 1/2 furlongs on the hillside turf course. The hope is Sunday’s race will be the start of a lengthy campaign for Teddy’s Barino.
“She’s a very nice filly,” trainer Mark Glatt said. “She’s lightly raced. She’s ready and she ran as good on turf as she has on dirt. I think down the hill is a perfect race for her starting back. No reason she won’t pick up right where she left off.”
Owned by the partnership of Red Baron’s Barn and Vana Con Suerte, Teddy’s Barino will be ridden by leading rider Flavien Prat, who is nearing a move to Kentucky and then New York. Prat is riding at Santa Anita only on Sunday this week.
Prat was aboard Teddy’s Barino for a fifth-place finish in a maiden race in 2020 in her lone start at 2, and a second in the Fleet Treat Stakes for California-bred 3-year-old fillies at seven furlongs at Del Mar last July.

Teddy’s Barino disputed the pace in the Fleet Treat and was beaten a length by I’m So Anna. Following that race, Glatt said Teddy’s Barino was sidelined with “bone issues” that did not require surgery.
“Those guys are great about giving horses time when they need it,” he said of the partnership. “She didn’t have anything drastically wrong with her. She’s 4 and her bones are a little more solid. Hopefully, she can withstand racing and training a little better than she has.
“She’s got a lot ahead of her if we can keep her healthy.”
Teddy’s Barino is part of a field of six in Sunday’s first race, and is one of two runners in the field with stakes experience. She’s a Dime was second in the Spring Fever Stakes for statebred fillies and mares at six furlongs in February 2021. Sunday’s race will be the first start for She’s a Dime since she finished 10th of 11 in an allowance race on turf at Del Mar last August.
The 3-year-old filly Youte is capable of a win. Trained by Clifford Sise, Youte was second in her first start against older fillies and mares in an allowance race at six furlongs on turf March 11, racing in second throughout and finishing well to miss by a half-length.
Jockey Juan Hernandez rode Youte to a win in a maiden special weight race at 6 1/2 furlongs on the main turf oval in her second start on Jan. 28 and regains the mount from Prat.
The allowance race is the first start in three months for Bella D, who is a threat from off the pace. Trained by Mike Puype, Bella D has been third in three of her last four starts.
