OZONE PARK, N.Y. – In a graded stakes race in New York that features three horses from trainer Todd Pletcher’s barn and one apiece from Chad Brown and Bill Mott, it’s the unheralded Marialice Coffey who has the most accomplished runner in the field. Coffey sends out Flora Dora in Saturday’s Grade 2, $300,000 Demoiselle Stakes for juvenile fillies at Aqueduct. While her horse – like every other horse in the field – has just one win, Flora Dora’s came in the $500,000 My Dear Girl, a division of the Florida Sire Stakes at Gulfstream Park. :: Bet the Demoiselle Stakes with DRF Bets and get FREE access to this article and all of DRF Plus, including Aqueduct selections, video, and real-time analysis. Flora Dora then was beaten a half-length by Big World in the Grade 3 Tempted at a one-turn mile over Aqueduct’s main track Nov. 4. The Demoiselle is run at 1 1/8 miles. “We went into that feeling it was a little short for her, but going over the track would help us with this race,” said Coffey, who in August became the private trainer for the Coffeepot Stables. “This is the race we really wanted to target, more so for the distance. She seems to get better the further she goes.” Flora Dora, a daughter of First Dude, breaks from the rail under Kendrick Carmouche. Lewis Bay, trained by Brown, is by Bernardini out of Summer Raven, who won the Tempted here in 2004. After finishing second in her debut going six furlongs, Lewis Bay romped to a six-length victory in a seven-furlong maiden race at Belmont on Oct. 18. Pletcher has won three of the last four runnings of the Demoiselle and five overall. Pletcher entered Thrilled, Mo d’Amour, and Lost Raven but is likely to run just two. Thrilled, beaten a nose in the Grade 3 Miss Grillo on turf, will be making her dirt debut in this spot. Invite and Disco Rose complete the field for the Demoiselle, which will go as race 3 at 12:50 p.m. Eastern. KEY CONTENDERS Flora Dora (Last 3 Beyers: 75-64-53) ◗ Ran up on heels in the early stages of her win in the My Dear Girl Stakes and did her best running in the last sixteenth of the race. ◗ Steadied entering the far turn of the Tempted and rallied to finish within a half-length of Big World, the same filly who beat her by 8 3/4 lengths sprinting at Saratoga. Lewis Bay (Beyers: 74-58) ◗ After finishing second when contesting the pace in her debut, this filly showed the ability to sit and finish when stalking the pace going seven furlongs in a maiden win five weeks later. The fourth- and sixth-place finishers from that Oct. 18 race came back to win. ◗ Lewis Bay is a half-sister to Winslow Homer, a stakes winner at 1 1/8 miles. Thrilled (Last 3 Beyers: 61-79-72) ◗ Pletcher had thought about running her in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies but had Rachel’s Valentina for that spot. “Even before the Breeders’ Cup, I had in my mind we might give this a go,” Pletcher said. “I think she’ll handle the mile and an eighth. She trains well enough on the dirt that we need to give it a try.” ◗ Didn’t handle the soft turf when finishing 11th in the Juvenile Fillies Turf.
