Tapwrit filly tops Texas sale at $300,000
A Tapwrit filly sold for $300,000 to top the Texas 2-year-olds in training sale on Wednesday at Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie.
The Texas Thoroughbred Association, which conducts the sale, reported that 103 juveniles sold from the record-sized catalog for the single-session sale for a gross of $3,420,000. At last year's sale, 88 sold for $3,050,700.
The average price was $33,204, a small dip of 4 percent from $34,667 last year. The median dropped 37 percent, to $17,500 from $28,000.
The buyback rate was 38 percent, compared to 25 percent.
Randy Morse, as agent, signed the ticket for the sale-topping Tapwrit filly. The filly had distinguished herself by working a furlong in 9 4/5 seconds during Monday's under-tack preview show at Lone Star, the bullet time.
The filly, who was consigned by Pike Racing, as agent, was bred by H. Allen Poindexter in Kentucky. She is out of the winning Henny Hughes mare Sky o’ Blue, dam of two winners from as many starters, including stakes-placed Simmering. That runner is by Anchor Down, who, like Tapwrit, is a son of Tapit.
“The Tapwrit filly certainly didn’t disappoint at any point this week,” TTA sales director Foster Bridewell said in a release. “She breezed in 9 4/5, showed well at the barn, and presented herself beautifully in the ring. We’re lucky to have had her in our sale and thankful to all parties involved.
“We’re truly fortunate to have had such quality offerings in our 2023 sale,” Bridewell added. “It’s a testament to the hard work and time put in by our sellers and teams behind these athletes. And we’re grateful to our buyers locally, nationally, and internationally for supporting our sale.”
