Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile winner Tapizar, the sire of Eclipse Award champion Monomoy Girl, has died in a stable accident. Gainesway Farm, which stood the 12-year-old Tapit horse, said Tapizar was euthanized after sustaining an injury in an accident in his stall in its quarantine barn. The stallion was scheduled to stand in Japan in 2021, with plans to arrive at Yushun Stallion Station on Hokkaido in mid-January. Tapizar, a son of perennial leading sire Tapit, raced as a homebred for Winchell Thoroughbreds. He stood alongside his sire, also a Winchell colorbearer, at Gainesway Farm since his retirement to stud in 2013. He was to become the lone son of perennial leading sire Tapit scheduled to stand in Japan for the season. Tapizar's three graded stakes wins were highlighted by the 2012 Dirt Mile at Santa Anita. He is represented by 11 stakes-winning progeny overall to date, led by Monomoy Girl, whose seven Grade 1 victories include the 2018 Kentucky Oaks and Breeders' Cup Distaff in a championship season, and this year's Distaff to potentially secure another title. Tapizar also is the sire of graded stakes winners Amalfi Coast, Honey Bunny, Jeltrin, Project Whiskey, and Solidify.
