Tap It to Win upsets Mighty Heart in Seagram Cup

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Tap It to Win upset the heavily favored 2020 Canadian Horse of the Year Mighty Heart in a gate-to-wire score in Saturday’s Grade 3 Seagram Cup at Woodbine.

Tap It to Win ($11.40) set slow fractions under Rafael Hernandez in the 1 1/16-mile route, with Mighty Heart chasing him throughout in second, ahead of Dolder Grand in third.

Tap It to Win maintained a clear lead exiting the far turn and never looked back, winning by 1 3/4 lengths over Mighty Heart, who stayed on his left lead throughout the stretch.

Special Forces closed inside for third, and was followed by Dolder Grand and Another Mystery. There was no show wagering on the five-horse race.

The final time was 1:43.79.

“The plan was to go to the lead,” Hernandez said. “When I looked back turning for home, I still had plenty (of horse).”

It was the second time trainer Mark Casse played the role of “Giant Killer” at the meet, after Souper Stonehenge defeated perennial Canadian champion sprinter Pink Lloyd in the Grade 3 Jacques Cartier.

The Tapit ridgling Tap It to Win earned $90,000 of the $156,000 purse for Live Oak Plantation.
