Tampa Bay Downs: Wide-open turf allowance tops card

Doug McCoy|Apr 12, 2012

OLDSMAR, Fla. – Anime, who sports a win and two seconds from her last three outings on the local turf course, tops an overflow field in Saturday’s feature race at Tampa Bay Downs. The first-level allowance will be run at a mile on turf and sports almost as many betting angles as it does participants.

Anime, from the Carlos Garcia stable, was a troubled fifth here in her first local start of the season and first race under Garcia’s care. Following that $25,000 claiming route for nonwinners-of-two, she tried nine furlongs on the grass at the same level, coming away with a two-length victory.

Moved up to allowance company, Anime rallied from off the pace to finish second going a mile, then came back at a mile and a sixteenth to loom a threat a furlong out before falling a neck short of Catch That Kitten.

Subpoena, owned by Lael Stables, will be making her first start for trainer Leigh Delacour Saturday and deserves a long look despite not having raced since last June.

Subpoena finished fourth behind Ruthenia in the Good Mood Stakes at Belmont Park in the fall of 2010. She was second against allowance foes at Gulfstream in March 2011 and seventh in the Edgewood Stakes at Churchill Downs last May. She has been training on a steady schedule for a stable that sports a 25 percent winning average at this meet.

First Run will make her all important second start against winners on Saturday. The late-running filly won her maiden two back by rallying from eighth. She was claimed from the Delacour barn by trainer Rory Barron in January.

She’s On Her Way from the Bernell Rhone barn will be jumping up quite a bit in class but will be shooting for her fourth straight win. Last time out she came off a 10-week break to romp by five lengths going seven furlongs on the main track. She has made 11 career starts on turf.

A Shot Away also comes into Saturday’s race off a winning effort. She has one win from six lifetime starts on grass.

Par Lady is a closer who came up just a length short when third in her last with tough claiming distaffers, while Reba’s Affair makes her first start since winning here in mid-February.
