ARCADIA, Calif. - Tamara, winner of the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante last September, is scheduled to have her 2024 debut in the Grade 2 Great Lady M. Stakes against older fillies and mares at Los Alamitos on July 6. Unraced since a seventh-place finish as the 4-5 favorite in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at Santa Anita in November, Tamara has had a steady pattern of workouts in the last month for trainer Richard Mandella. On Saturday, Tamara, 3, worked a half-mile in 47 seconds, the quickest of 59 works at the distance. Mandella has limited local options for Tamara in coming months in California. The Great Lady M. Stakes is the next stakes on dirt for the female sprint division in which Tamara is eligible. “It’s all we’ve got,” Mandella said. The $100,000 Desert Stormer Stakes at six furlongs for fillies and mares at Santa Anita on June 2 is open to 4-year-olds and older mares. Tamara was diagnosed with a splint bone injury after her loss in the BC Juvenile Fillies and was given a lengthy rest in the winter. Owned by Spendthrift Farm, Tamara is by Bolt d’Oro and out of the four-time champion and Hall of Fame mare Beholder. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
