ARCADIA, Calif. - Tamara, the impeccably bred Grade 1 winner, is scheduled to undergo surgery to have a bone chip removed from an ankle later this week, trainer Richard Mandella said.   Tamara sustained the injury in late January when she kicked a fence while leaving Santa Anita’s infield training track, Mandella said. “She’ll have a chip taken out of an ankle at the end of the week,” Mandella said. “It shouldn’t be a long downtime. We’re hoping to have her back at the end of the Del Mar meeting.” Del Mar’s summer meeting runs from July 18 to Sept. 7. A 4-year-old filly, Tamara is by Bolt d’Oro out of Beholder, a Hall of Fame mare and four-time champion in a five-year career from 2012 to 2016. :: Bet with the Best! Owned by Spendthrift Farm, Tamara has not raced since she finished second by a nose at 2-5 in a six-furlong allowance race at Del Mar in November, her only start of 2024. Tamara was withdrawn from the Grade 1 La Brea Stakes at Santa Anita on Dec. 26 because of illness. She had resumed training when the recent injury occurred. As a 2-year-old in 2023, Tamara won the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante and finished seventh of 12 as the 4-5 favorite in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at Santa Anita that November. She emerged from that race with an injury. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
