Talk to Ya Later waves goodbye to Baksheesh in Algoma

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Talk to Ya Later upset the 1-2 favorite, Baksheesh, in the $100,000 Algoma, one of four Tapeta stakes for graduates of Canadian yearling sales on Sunday’s Woodbine program.
With Emma-Jayne Wilson aboard, Talk to Ya Later sat behind the other four entrants in the seven-furlong sprint for 3-year-old fillies. She rallied wide on the turn and collared Baksheesh inside the eighth pole before drawing off to prevail by 3 1/2 lengths in a time of 1:24.43.
Talk to Ya Later ($10.10) graduated in her debut late in the 2021 Woodbine meet, but was only an early factor in her Aug. 6 season opener on the grass.
“I wasn’t here for her last race, when I was in England, and she didn’t have a great trip,” Wilson recalled. “We were hoping for a rebound off that. I was hoping to mimic her maiden break - stalk the pace and make a run.
“When I saw them line up four across the track, I had a nice position in behind and I was pretty happy with that. Talk to Ya Later has a lovely big old stride on her. She knows when to quicken and run on. I couldn’t have asked the other riders to ride it any better for myself. I got into a nice stalking position, swung her out when I could, and ran them down.”

*** Full Screen gave trainer Julie Belhumeur her first stakes victory in the $100,400 Elgin for 3-year-old colts and geldings.
Full Screen put away the other speed in the seven-furlong sprint and opened up a clear lead at the quarter pole en route to a 4 3/4-length tally over favored Giant Teddy, in a time of 1:23.35.
Jeffrey Alderson rode Full Screen, a son of Big Screen, who was coming off back-to-back dull races on the grass.
“It worked out to our gameplan that we had set up,” Alderson said. “He does like being forwardly placed. We went back to what works.”
Full Screen ($11.50) banked $60,000 for owner Nidel Charfi.
*** Gran Spirited annexed the $202,000 Simcoe Stakes for 2-year-old colts and geldings by a neck over the fast-closing favorite Twin City.
With Declan Carroll aboard, Gran Spirited covered 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:18.23 in his first start since a second-out maiden score on the grass.
“He fell asleep on me a little earlier than he should have,” Carroll said. “He takes a bit (of coaxing) to get going, but that’s just greenness. He’s going to move forward from this race. I think we’ve yet to see the best. He should progress very nicely.”
Gran Spirited ($14.20) earned $120,000 for Heste Sport Inc. The gelded son of Shaman Ghost is trained by Mark Casse.
*** Favored Anam Cara ($6.70) closed strongly on the outside to win the $201,600 Muskoka Stakes for 2-year-old fillies by 1 3/4 lengths over longshot Souper Sinclair.
Anam Cara collected $120,000 while becoming the first stakes winner for owner-trainer Sarah Ritchie. Jockey Patrick Husbands said the daughter of Frac Daddy lost a shoe at the beginning of the 6 1/2-furlong event.
“I was concerned when I got in the gate,” Husbands said. “When I looked down, I saw a shoe halfway on with only one more horse left to load. She blew a shoe, but she still showed that she was the best. She ran a big race.”
The final time was 1:17.61.
