Turf Paradise

Talented invader draws outside

Michael Hammersly|Mar 30, 2006

Horse B With You was in too deep when facing top fillies Balance and Wild Fit in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Oaks on March 12. She faces no such hurdles Saturday as she invades Turf Paradise to take a swing at the $40,000 Scottsdale Handicap. Carded at about a mile on the turf for 3-year-old fillies, the Scottsdale lured a field of nine.

And while the competition might not measure up to Balance and Wild Fit, there are other hurdles for Horse B With You. The 120-pound highweight, she must give five to eight pounds to her eight rivals and must also deal with post 9, the far outside.

Prior to her seventh-place finish on the main track in the Santa Anita Oaks, Horse B With You rallied for third in her only turf start, a sprint on the hillside turf course at Santa Anita on Feb. 4. She ended up 1 1/2 lengths behind Harriett Lane, who would come right back to win again. Trainer Nick Hines claimed Horse B With You for a hefty $80,000 that day. Prior to that race, she was third in the Grade 3 Santa Ysabel.

The local contingent isn't nearly as proven and, in fact, Horse B With You's main rival may be another Southern California raider, Broken Tears. Trained by Doug O'Neill, Broken Tears was fourth - behind Balance, who was disqualified - in the Hidden Light on turf at the Oak Tree at Santa Anita meet last November. When last seen, she was a nonthreatening fifth in an allowance turf route at Santa Anita on Jan. 15. Broken Tears has worked solidly for the past month or so, and her big maiden win on the grass at Calder last summer shows she's at home on the turf. Alex Bisono rides.

Saraswatianmahagan, In Full Command, and Classical Tap may all be maidens, but all at least have shown some form on this turf course.
