ETOBICOKE, Ontario – The $500,000 Natalma has evolved into an important Grade 1 fixture on the racing calendar. The last two editions of the stakes for 2-year-old fillies included the brilliant 2023 winner She Feels Pretty, currently the leading older female on turf in North America, and the future Grade 1 Alabama winner Nitrogen, who ran third last year en route to being crowned Canadian champion 2-year-old filly. The Natalma and Grade 1, $500,000 Summer, an open race for 2-year-olds, top Saturday’s Woodbine Mile undercard and are Breeders’ Cup Win and You’re In qualifiers. Both one-mile events have been moved to the inner turf for this year while the main course undergoes restoration. “It’s going to be interesting,” trainer Mark Casse said. “I think it will be a little more educational for horses going to the Breeders’ Cup. It’s [always been] a little issue when you run in the Summer and Natalma and have only one-turn experience. Now, this is going to help you with some two-turn experience. The post is going to be very important.” Godolphin and trainer Charlie Appleby have the probable favorite from England for each race – Dance To The Music in the 10-horse Natalma and Wild Desert in the 12-horse Summer. Appleby and Godolphin have won both races twice. Dance To The Music prevailed in both of her starts at Newmarket, most notably the Group 3 Sweet Solera going a straight seven furlongs. “She was taking on more experienced fillies and was very professional,” Appleby said. “This will be her first time on a turn and the track is tighter than anything she will have encountered before, but she has been pleasing us in her work at home, so we come here with plenty of confidence.” :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! Wild Desert graduated impressively debuting at Haydock in May and is coming off a troubled third in the Group 2 Superlative at Newmarket. “He has shown a good attitude in all of his races. Even when he was hampered on his last start, he kept on gamely,” Appleby said. “As with the filly, this horse has not raced on a turn yet, so this will be another learning curve for him. He has also been working well and is from an exceptional family, so we are hoping he can get his first group win here.” Trainer Kevin Attard is well represented in both races, with Star Attraction, Dyna, and the supplemented La Culasse in the Natalma, and the unbeaten trio of Two Out Hero, Marcus J, and Bill of Ice in the Summer. Star Attraction, the second foal from the Attard-trained 2020 Woodbine Mile winner Starship Jubilee, graduated second time out in a blanket finish on the main turf. “The turf was a little soft the day she won,” Attard recalled. “I was expecting more from her. I don’t know if she really liked that [ground]. I thought she worked decently the other day. I think the extra distance and two turns will favor all my horses.” Dyna lost her debut against the boys by a nose and is coming off a third in the 6 1/2-furlong Catch a Glimpse Stakes, which was won with an 85 Beyer Speed Figure by Natalma contender Corsia Veloce. Two Out Hero should be well backed off a daylight score in the 6 1/2-furlong Soaring Free Stakes on the main turf, for which he got an 81 Beyer. He graduated by 12 lengths with a 74 Beyer in a six-furlong maiden special weight on the Tapeta July 13. “He won, but I don’t know if he was at his best that day,” Attard said, regarding the Soaring Free. “I’m looking forward to seeing him improve more. I really liked the way he worked last week. Hopefully, we’ll get to see a better horse.” Marcus J won his lone outing Aug. 3 on Tapeta in a six-furlong maiden special weight by eight lengths while earning a 79 Beyer. The Ontario-bred has been working up a storm in the interim. “He had a very good work last week,” Attard said. “I think he’s getting better. I’m excited to see him go.” Bill of Ice came from eight lengths back to win his 1 1/16-mile debut on the inner turf going away with a 56 Beyer on Aug. 24. “He won fairly easy,” Attard said. “He’s going to be the only horse going into the race with two-turn experience on that course. That might be a bonus. He’s going to have to run a lot faster, but I like the way he did it. He was pretty professional.” Casse sends out Catch a Glimpse runner-up Sweet Fusion and Pina Colada in the Natalma. For the Summer, he has Casson, Jupiter, Rude Procedure, Timeframe, and the supplemented Military Time, who overcame a slow start two weeks ago to land his debut on the Tapeta with an 80 Beyer. Victoria Stakes winner Casson outran Jupiter and Rude Procedure when second after vying for the lead in the Soaring Free. The son of Caravaggio is stretching out with a blend of speed and stamina in his pedigree. :: Subscribe to the DRF Post Time Email Newsletter: Get the news you need to play today's races!  The other Summer entrants are Argos, Thesecretadversary, and Teddy’s Rocket. Kentucky-based Argos finished a wide third in the Soaring Free after graduating at first asking at Ellis Park for trainer Riley Mott. After running second in his first three outings, Irish-bred Thesecretadversary graduated in the Aug. 8 Churchill Stakes at Tipperary for trainer James Stack. Teddy’s Rocket won a maiden race on debut traveling a mile at Saratoga under the guidance of trainer Miguel Clement. Saratoga shipper Deep Learning should be among the favorites in the Natalma but has been saddled with the outside post. She won her Aug. 8 opener going long at the Spa with an 84 Beyer for trainer Chad Brown. The John Servis-trained Hot Mash earned an 80 Beyer for her blowout debut victory going 5 1/2 furlongs at Ellis on Aug. 11, while Dixie Law lugged in through the stretch while mounting a wide rally when taking her debut over six furlongs on the main turf here July 12. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
