Tahiyra retired from racing; Desert Crown euthanized
Three-year-old filly Tahirya's retirement was announced Monday following her distant third-place finish Saturday in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot.
Tahiyra, an Aga Khan homebred trained by Dermot Weld, couldn't show her best over the sodden Ascot course in the QE II. Tahiyra prefers much quicker ground and was narrowly beaten over a soft Newmarket course starting her 2023 campaign in the 1000 Guineas.
At 2, Tahiyra won the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes, and her Group 1 success this year came in the Irish 1000 Guineas, the Coronation Stakes, and against older horses in the Matron Stakes, where she raced brilliantly.
* 2022 Epsom Derby winner Desert Crown was euthanized Monday after failing to recover from a training injury sustained in August, his connections reported. Desert Crown, who'd raced only once this year, underwent surgery to repair a fractured fetlock and initially appeared to be recovering. Michael Stoute trained Desert Crown for Saeed Suhail.
