ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Swift Delivery, reportedly named with pop star Taylor Swift in mind, made headlines this week when her beau, football star Travis Kelce, bought into him through co-owner Team Valor International. The Mark Casse-trained steel gray will try to live up to all the hype in his stakes debut in Saturday’s $125,000 Toronto Cup at Woodbine. Swift Delivery came from South Florida to graduate by 16 1/2 lengths with a 90 Beyer Speed Figure in a 1 1/16-mile maiden special on the Tapeta on June 23. Most recently on July 13, the son of red-hot Not This Time rallied from 10th to win a 1 1/16-mile allowance on the inner turf over two next-out winners. Swift Delivery goes a mile around one turn on the main turf Saturday under Patrick Husbands, who’s won a whopping 13 stakes at the meet for Casse. “We’re very high on him,” Casse said. “He’s got a huge pedigree. [Assistant trainer] David Adams and Patrick Husbands kept telling me last year he’s the best 2-year-old colt we have in Canada, but he just didn’t run very well. We gelded him, gave him a little time off this winter, and he came back and won by 16 lengths. When he won on the inner turf from the 11-hole, I thought that was very impressive.” :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match + FREE All Access PPs! Join DRF Bets. Casse, who’s been among the hottest trainers on the continent this summer, is excited about the publicity that’s been generated by Kelce’s foray into racehorse ownership. “This is great for racing,” Casse said. “This isn’t just about Travis Kelce buying a horse – he bought a good horse.” There’s no shortage of early foot among the other five entrants, and Dresden Row could give Swift Delivery a run for his money with his effective tactical speed. Trained by Lorne Richards, Dresden Row comes in on a three-race win streak on Tapeta dating back to November. He wired first-level allowance opposition in December and cleared the second allowance condition off a seven-month layoff July 12, when he beat two next-out winners while putting up an 88 Beyer going seven furlongs. Dresden Row wound up second behind Babbo when debuting in a turf sprint Oct. 1. Babbo has taken a much different path to the Toronto Cup. Babbo won the rich Coronation Futurity in front-running style over 1 1/8 miles on the Tapeta in November. He got some down time in Florida during the winter and disappointed in two sprint stakes in June before trainer Sid Attard gave him an early-summer vacation. Piper’s Factor and Western Whirl are both owned by Chiefswood Stables. Piper’s Factor is competing on the grass for the first time off a flat fourth in the Plate Trial Stakes. None of his dam’s four turf runners won, but sire The Factor has gotten a respectable 14 percent turf winners. Western Whirl is coming off a front-running second in a seven-furlong allowance and could vie for the lead with Babbo. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
