SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Home sweet home. Sweet Reason, who began her career last year with two dominant victories at Saratoga – including the Grade 1 Spinaway – hopes to use the home-court advantage to good use in a wildly competitive renewal of the Grade 1, $500,000 Test Stakes at Saratoga on Saturday. The Test, for 3-year-old fillies at seven furlongs, drew a field of 12, 10 of whom have won stakes, six of whom are graded stakes winners. Sweet Reason, coming off a victory in the Grade 1 Acorn at Belmont, is trying to become the first filly to win the Spinaway and Test since Numbered Account in 1971-72. :: DRF Live: Get real-time updates and insights from DRF reporters and handicappers starting at 12:30 p.m. ET on Saturday “She certainly owned the track last year in her two starts, but I think she loved Belmont, too,” trainer Leah Gyarmati said. Fiftyshadesofgold is 2 for 2 at seven furlongs and is coming off a fourth-place finish in the Grade 1 Acorn last out. Since then, she has fired four bullet works leading to this race. “She’s done everything the right way,” trainer Bret Calhoun said. “Came out of that race good, worked forwardly for this race. Obviously a very tough spot.” Fiftyshadesofgold finished fourth in the Grade 2 Adirondack here last year, getting interfered with in the stretch. She came out of that race with an injury that sidelined her for the remainder of the year. “She handled this track up here last year well,” Calhoun said. “Obviously that race was a big disappointment because I thought she was the best horse that day. She’s come back and trained well over it again this year. The only negative I see is the post.” DRF FORMULATOR FACT: No. 2 Fiftyshadesofgold. Trainer William Bret Calhoun is 5 for 17 with a $2.29 ROI over the past four years going route to sprint on dirt following a layoff of between 45 and 60 days.Click for more details. – Dan Illman Southern Honey brings a three-race winning streak into the Test for trainer Rusty Arnold, who won the race in 2001 with Victory Ride. Southern Honey hasn’t run since winning the Grade 3 Winning Colors at Churchill on May 26. She was forced to miss the Victory Ride Stakes at Belmont due to a temperature. “Maybe it’s a blessing in disguise,” Arnold said. “She hasn’t run against these types of fillies. Leah Gyarmati’s filly has been very impressive to me. She deserves to be the favorite.”Tea Time steps up into Grade 1 company off two convincing victories sprinting at Parx and Delaware Park. She worked an excellent half-mile here last Saturday but she could be part of a hot early pace.
