ARCADIA, Calif. - The three-race winning streak Sweet August Moon has compiled at Santa Anita this year has taken her career to new heights. She won her first stakes in the Honest Lady Stakes last month and her first graded stakes in Sunday's $100,000 Las Flores Handicap, a Grade 3 for fillies and mares at 6 1/2 furlongs. Ridden by Aaron Gryder, Sweet August Moon ($8.20) won by 1 1/4 lengths over Foxy Danseur, who finished a head in front of 4-5 favorite High Resolve. High Resolve, the winner of the Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Sprint at Gulfstream Park in January, set early fractions of 22.01 and 44.85 seconds before fading in the final furlong. Sweet August Moon was timed in 1:15.21. She was third for the first half-mile, in pursuit of High Resolve, and rallied wide in the stretch to reach the front. "She's always been such a big filly, and it looks like her ability is catching up to her size," Gryder said. "I kept my filly off the rail because I thought she'd be a little more relaxed there. Once I got her outside turning for home, she really accelerated well." Sweet August Moon has won 5 of 11 starts and $238,102. Owned by Legacy Ranch and Shirley MacPherson and trained by Brian Koriner, Sweet August Moon won an optional claimer here in February to launch her current winning streak.
