It will be young talent on the same team Saturday when 27-year-old leading rider Edgard Zayas teams with 2-year-old Swaggy George in the featured 10th race at Gulfstream Park. The six-furlong race is a non-winners of two lifetime allowance for 2-year-olds that offers a claiming option of $60,000. The field of nine includes Isolate, a debut winner in August, and Dauntless Gal, who takes on male rivals. Swaggy George impressed Zayas with his four-length debut win over maiden special weight rivals May 22 at Gulfstream. He’s since been working at Gulfstream Park West. “The first time I rode him, he really surprised me,” Zayas said. “When I got on him, he was a little green. He was scared of everything. I wasn’t sure how he was going to run. :: Want to get your Past Performances for free? Click to learn more. “When the gate opened, he turned into a different horse. He took all the dirt in his face and it didn’t bother him at all. He swung outside, passed all the horses so easy. He just handled everything like a pro.” Zayas was aboard the colt by the Giant’s Causeway stallion Not This Time for J. Stables. Antonio Sano trains Swaggy George, and Zayas said the horseman’s longtime support has been one of the keys to his meet. Zayas leads the local colony at the summer meet with 124 wins from 680 starts for mount earnings of $3.5 million. This season, he has ridden more horses for trainers Saffie Joseph Jr., Mike Maker and Todd Pletcher. “They’ve really given me a big shot this meet,” said Zayas. “I think having the good trips once you have the best horse in the race – that’s what it’s all about.” Zayas also credited the work of his longtime agent Tito Fuentes. Zayas won the summer meet last year at Gulfstream and also won the track’s summer title in 2014. As for Swaggy George, he has been well flattered since his debut win, with three of the horses he defeated coming back to win maiden races between Gulfstream and Delaware Park. The chief threat could be Isolate, another debut winner who has seen two horses he defeated return to win maiden races at Gulfstream. The 11-race card Saturday includes two other offerings for 2-year-olds. Both are maiden races. Also on the program, Doll Collection, a daughter of champion Groupie Doll, meets winners in the sixth race. It’s a first-level allowance sprint for fillies and mares that carries an optional claiming price of $25,000. Doll Collection was a maiden special weight winner last out at Gulfstream and before that was second in a maiden race won by, Grand Chu Classe. Grand Chu Classe is now undefeated in three starts, with her latest win the Weber City Miss Stakes at Laurel Park, which rewarded its winner with a berth into the Grade 2 Black-Eyed Susan at Pimlico.
