Surface the question for Gorgeous Ginny in Jack and Jeff Coady Sr. Stakes

PHOENIX – There’s an interesting dynamic in the $25,000 Jack and Jeff Coady Sr. Stakes at Turf Paradise on Sunday. Of the eight 3-year-old fillies in the about 7 1/2-furlong race on grass, only four have raced on turf and only two have won on it. And it’s likely that the two fillies to beat are among those who have never raced on grass.
Gorgeous Ginny, owned by Randy Howg and trained by Robertino Diodoro, showed talent in Southern California, romping in her debut at Santa Anita last spring before running second in the Landaluce there on July 2 and third in the CTBA Stakes at Del Mar on Aug. 2. She wasn’t seen again until she resurfaced here to dominate the 6 1/2-furlong Arizona Juvenile Fillies Stakes on Dec. 30 by seven lengths. If she can come close to that kind of performance level on turf, the others are running for second.
Myrcella won the filly division of the Arizona Breeders’ Futurity here on Dec. 9 before finishing sixth to Gorgeous Ginny in the Arizona Juvenile Fillies. Sunday’s race marks the first start on grass for the daughter of Tribal Rule. She’s owned by Regan Anderson and Molly Pearson and trained by Pearson.
City Spirit, owned by the Sawyer Cattle Company and trained by Dan McFarlane, is one of just two in here to have won on turf (Mighty Ghostly is the other). The daughter of Temple City moves back to turf after finishing third in a dirt sprint here Dec. 17.
