Superstition fresh and ready for Daisycutter Stakes

A seven-week gap between starts may benefit Superstition when the 4-year-old filly starts in Sunday’s $80,000 Daisycutter Handicap at Del Mar on Sunday.
Superstition was third by five lengths in the Grade 2 Monrovia Stakes at 6 1/2 furlongs for fillies and mares at Santa Anita on June 5, a loss that led trainer Richard Mandella to reassess her campaign.
“It looked like she needed a break,” Mandella said. “So I decided to freshen her up.”
Superstition has since had two workouts, including a quick five furlongs in 58.60 seconds last Monday.
“She’ll work as fast as you want,” Mandella said. “She seems pretty good. That work shows it.”
The Daisycutter Stakes is run at five furlongs on turf for fillies and mares and drew an excellent field, including Bulletproof One, Constantia, and Gypsy Spirit, stakes winners in the last year.
Constantia and Superstition have met three times this year. Constantia was third behind Superstition in the Wishing Well Stakes at Santa Anita in February. Constantia and Superstition were first and third in the Mizdirection Stakes on April 17. Constantia was later second to Venetian Harbor in the Monrovia.
The Daisycutter Stakes is the first start of 2021 for Bulletproof One, who is expected to set the pace from an inside post. The Daisycutter Stakes is the stakes debut for Rakassah, the winner of two allowance races on turf in recent starts, and the unbeaten filly Bruja Escarlata, who faces a class test in her first start since March.
