Supermason being considered for Assault, Prelude stakes

Supermason, who racked up his second blowout stakes win last Saturday night at Lone Star Park, has no immediate race plans but long term could be a candidate for the $50,000 Assault on July 11 at Lone Star Park and the $100,000 Prelude on Aug. 8 at Louisiana Downs, said trainer Bret Calhoun.
“I’m not sure where we’re going next,” Calhoun said. “At the end of the meet is the Assault – it’s older horses, horses the caliber of Texas Air – but that’s one thing we’ve got on our radar. We’ll fill in the blanks with something between now and then, something around late May or the first week or two in June.”
Supermason has come to hand over the last several months. He was a 14-length winner of the seven-furlong division of the Texas Stallion Stakes in February at Sam Houston and last Saturday rolled by 6 1/4 lengths in the one-mile division at Lone Star. It marked the first two-turn win from Supermason.
“I thought it was a pretty professional race out of him,” Calhoun said. “He’s gotten more mentally mature every race. I thought that was another step forward for him. I felt pretty comfortable after the first quarter-mile went in 23.80 [seconds]. I thought that was a key in the race, the first quarter-mile, and he was rateable and controllable, and when he turned for home, he finished up well. It was a very professional race for him.”
Calhoun said right now, he would like to keep Supermason racing around two turns. The son of Grasshopper is owned by Brad Grady.
McNeils win six on card
Jockeys and brothers Bryan and Erik McNeil had a banner Tuesday at Will Rogers Downs near Tulsa, Okla., where they teamed to win six of the 10 races on the card. Bryan McNeil, who leads the standings, won five races – the second, third, fifth, eighth, and 10th – while Erik McNeil accounted for the ninth with $22 winner Oh My Goodness. The McNeils are sons of retired jockey Tony McNeil.
◗ Lone Star will have a special daytime post of 1:35 p.m. Central on Saturday.
