OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Super Surprise was no match for Isabelle when she finished 5 1/4 lengths behind in the Bay Ridge Stakes on Dec. 11. But there are a few factors that could help Super Surprise when the two meet again in Sunday’s $100,000 Biogio’s Rose Stakes at Aqueduct. In the Bay Ridge, Isabelle benefited from a dream inside trip under Kendrick Carmouche on a card when the inside was the place to be. Meanwhile, Super Surprise, the 2-1 favorite, was five wide in the stretch. Super Surprise was the 120-pound highweight and conceding four pounds to Isabelle in the Bay Ridge; the two will carry equal weights at 121 pounds Sunday. Lastly, Isabelle’s 95 Beyer Speed Figure from the Bay Ridge was a career best, perhaps making her susceptible to a regression, or “bounce,” though she has had eight weeks since that race. “She had a really good trip,” said Leana Willaford, assistant to Bill Mott, the trainer of Isabelle. “It worked out great. Kendrick was on the fence, and it opened up for him. She’s doing well. She looks good, her works have been good. Hopefully, we get as good a trip.” Super Surprise, who won the Fleet Indian Stakes by four lengths at Saratoga last summer, “didn’t get the right trip” in the Bay Ridge, according to Byron Hughes, assistant to trainer Todd Pletcher. Jules N Rome, who finished fourth in the Bay Ridge, and recent allowance winners Dream On and Legally Bay complete the field. KEY CONTENDERS Super Surprise, by Giant Surprise Last 3 Beyers: 86-76-86 ◗ Though she has lost her last two as a favorite, she is due one more chance after getting the worst of trips when second to Isabelle in the Bay Ridge. ◗ Shows four steady works since her defeat. Hughes said Super Surprise’s half-mile move in 49.80 seconds on Jan 28 “was particularly good.” ◗ Jose Ortiz is back in town to ride. Isabelle, by Successful Appeal Last 3 Beyers: 95-64-86 ◗ After failing to hold the lead when setting the pace in two prior stakes, she came from off the pace while enjoying a dream inside trip to upset the Bay Ridge at odds of 9-1. “We’ve been working her in behind horses every time,” Willaford said. Jules N Rome, by Dunkirk Last 3 Beyers: 79-72-89 ◗ Looks to be loose on the lead in this spot, though trainer Rudy Rodriguez said he would prefer to get the kind of off-the-pace trip she did in winning the Saratoga Dew Stakes at Saratoga last August. ◗ Seemed to be comfortable on the lead before fading to fourth in the Bay Ridge. “The other day, she had everything perfect, and she don’t kick,” Rodriguez said. “But if they don’t go, I’m taking it. I’m not going to give it to them.” ◗ Rodriguez said Jules N Rome is a nervous type, and he moved her from Belmont to Aqueduct following the Bay Ridge so she wouldn’t have to ship on race day.
