GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas – Super Stock will be making a triumphant return to Lone Star Park on Monday for the $300,000 Texas Derby. It was at this track last summer that he won his maiden in a division of the Texas Thoroughbred Futurity. Now, Super Stock returns a Grade 1 winner for connections with strong ties to Texas. “Where else would I want to run?” said trainer Steve Asmussen. “A family horse and a home track.” The Texas Derby is one of the main events on Lone Star Million Day, which features five stakes worth a cumulative $1.1 million. It’s the richest card of the meet. The Texas Derby as well as the Grade 3, $400,000 Steve Sexton Mile will be part of a pick four on races 8-11, which has a minimum guaranteed pool of $100,000. Lone Star will have mandatory payouts on all carryover pools Monday. The Weather Channel is calling for a high of 79 degrees and a 38 percent chance of rain. :: Join DRF Bets and play the races with a $250 First Deposit Bonus. Click to learn more. Super Stock won the Grade 1, $1 million Arkansas Derby April 10 for Asmussen’s father, Keith, and his longtime business partner Erv Woolsey. Super Stock rallied for a 2 1/2-length win and earned a career-high Beyer Speed Figure of 92. He went on to run 16th in the Kentucky Derby in his last start, May 1. “I think he ran a perfect race in the Arkansas Derby, and three weeks to the Derby was a bit quick for him to do his best,” said Steve Asmussen. “This is a very good race. It’s a very competitive race. He’ll need his running shoes. “I expect him to run well.” Ricardo Santana, Jr., has the mount from post 10 in the 1 1/16-mile stakes, which also drew Get Her Number, winner of last year’s Grade 1 American Pharoah at Santa Anita; Warrant, who comes off a runner-up finish in the $300,000 Oaklawn Stakes on May 1; Rightandjust, who won the local prep for the Texas Derby; Dreamer’s Disease, who set a hot pace in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile; and the promising Mr. Wireless. Get Her Number last raced in the Arkansas Derby, and was a close, troubled fourth. “He checked and took up pretty good in the first turn and got hit with a dirt clod in his eye,” Miller said. “He kind of lost his action and lost three or four lengths. He showed a lot of courage to run in spite of the trouble. He’s obviously a very nice horse, being a Grade 1 winner.” Miller noted Get Her Number won the American Pharoah over Rombauer, who would go on to win the Preakness. Get Her Number, who like Super Stock and Mr. Wireless is by Dialed In, will break from post 9 under Florent Geroux. The horse will be first Lasix. Joel Rosario will team with Warrant from post 5. “This will be his second start around two turns,” said trainer Brad Cox. “We always thought he was a horse that would improve with more ground and I thought he ran a big race in the Oaklawn Stakes. Hopefully, he got a lot out of it from a conditioning standpoint and will move forward in his second start around two turns.” Scarred rallied from next-to-last for fourth in the Oaklawn Stakes. “I’d like to see a little more pace from him than he showed last time,” Asmussen said. “He left himself with too much to do.” Rightandjust is moving back into stakes company after a 3 1/2 length allowance win May 9 at Lone Star. “I was pleased to see him sit behind horses,” said trainer Shane Wilson. “He’s a pretty versatile colt.” Mr. Wireless has won both of his two-turn starts by a nose. His latest came against allowance rivals May 1 at Oaklawn. “He’s just a very gutty horse,” said trainer Bret Calhoun. “He’s thriving right now. He seems to be getting better all the time, seems to have bounced out of his races very, very well. He’s had two pretty hard races where he’s had to dig down, gut it out all the way to the wire. The horse seems to be thriving on racing.” Mr. Wireless’s half-sister Ain’t No Elmers goes in the first stakes on the card, the $100,000 Memorial Day Sprint. The Grade 3-placed runner is part of a field of six fillies and mares. :: Get Daily Racing Form Past Performances - the exclusive home of Beyer Speed Figures “She’s had a bit of a slow transition from 3 to 4 and I think she’s really good right now,” said Calhoun. The horse to beat is Mundaye Call. She exits the Grade 1 Madison on April 3 at Keeneland. She set the pace and finished fifth by three lengths. The start was her first since October and the Beyer Figure of 91 that she earned is the best last-race number in the Memorial Day Sprint. “She ran respectable,” said Cox. “It was a good effort. “We’re excited about getting her started back and hopefully she’ll move forward in her second start off the layoff.” The other stakes on the card for fillies and mares is the $200,000 Ouija Board, a one-mile turf race led by Grade 2 winner Laura’s Light. She was an allowance winner at Santa Anita in her last start May 2. “She’s a very nice filly,” Miller said. “She’s really doing well right now. The last race was her third off the layoff and she really put it together, sat a good stalking trip, and really put them away in the stretch.” Geroux has the mount from the rail Monday. “She can sit or she can go to the lead,” said Miller. Cox will counter with Raven’s Cry, who became a stakes winner in the $75,000 Miss Houston in her most recent start April 3 at Sam Houston. She won the mile race from the 11 hole and it was her second victory in two starts for Cox. “She’s tough,” he said. “She overcame an outside post last race. It was a really good race. If you watch it, it’s even better visually than it looks on paper. She’s a good filly. Hopefully, she steps up.” Others in the field include two-time stakes winner Summering and Fair Hill invader Tuned. Grade 2 winner Texas Wedge and Grade 3 winner Chaos Theory invade from Southern California for the $100,000 Chamberlain Bridge at five furlongs on turf. The local cast includes six-time stakes winner Archidust. First post for the 11-race card is 2:20 p.m. Central.
