Super Humor stretching out in Chaves County Stakes

Mary Rampellini|Sep 29, 2017

Super Humor, who played pacesetter against Grade 1 sprinters two starts ago, will attempt to stretch her speed around two turns Monday in the $50,000 Chaves County at Zia Park in Hobbs, N.M. Her rivals include another sprint-to-route prospect in probable favorite Summer House.

The Chaves County is for fillies and mares at a mile, and it could produce starters for the New Mexico Cup card on Oct. 29 or the $75,000 Zia Park Distaff on Nov. 22. The cast of 10 includes Zasha, who twice has won the $170,000 Peppers Pride on New Mexico Cup Day; K P Wildcat and Caviar Kitty, who are past winners of the Harry Henson at a mile at Sunland Park; and Galactic Princess, a two-time stakes winner this summer at Arapahoe.

KEY CONTENDERS

Super Humor, by Super Saver
Last 3 Beyers: 78-77-73

◗ She faced Grade 1 company May 6 in the Humana Distaff going seven furlongs at Churchill Downs. Super Humor took the field through an opening quarter in 23 seconds and a half-mile in 46.40 before ending up seventh, 9 1/2 lengths behind winner Paulassilverlining. The runner-up from the race was Finest City, the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint winner in 2016.

◗ Super Humor has raced once since, and was third by a half-length in an allowance sprint June 30 at Thistledown. Super Humor goes for new connections Monday, as she will be making her first start for Judge Lanier Racing and trainer Miguel Hernandez.

◗ Super Humor has raced once around two turns and finished fourth in an optional $25,000 claiming race at one mile and 70 yards in June 2016 at Presque Isle Downs. She gets pedigree support for the distance move Monday as her sire, Super Saver, won the Kentucky Derby, and her dam, Heavenly Humor, was a stakes winner around two turns.

◗ Jorge Carreno has the mount from post 5.

Summer House, by Tiznow
Last 3 Beyers: 83-87-84

◗ She owns the field’s best collection of recent Beyer Speed Figures, her latest an 83 for a runner-up finish in the $75,000 Shine Again on Sept. 9 at Laurel. The race was run over seven furlongs, and Summer House set the pace and was edged by a half-length.

◗ Summer House will be making a rare start around two turns Monday. Her sire, Tiznow, was a two-time winner of the Breeders’ Cup Classic, while her dam, Mimi’s Bling, was a turf sprint stakes winner.

◗ Ry Eikleberry has the mount from post 8 for M and M Racing and trainer Rob Atras.
