Super Colerosa among eight set for turf debuts in Bold Ruckus

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Like all of his rivals, Super Colerosa will compete on the grass for the first time in Saturday’s $125,000 Bold Ruckus Stakes, a six-furlong sprint for Ontario-sired 3-year-olds.
Super Colerosa placed in two stakes last year for Mike DePaulo, currently one of Woodbine’s hottest trainers. He won both of his outings going short this spring in Ontario-sired allowance company.
Super Colerosa worked five furlongs in 1:00.80 over the turf training course last Sunday.
“He worked well on it,” DePaulo said. “He finished good. I’m certainly happy with him.”
Luis Contreras, who has the mount on Super Colerosa, combined with DePaulo to win last Saturday’s Steady Growth Stakes with Pender Harbour.
The Bold Ruckus is the eighth race on a 10-race card that also features the $100,000 Trillium, an overnight stakes for fillies and mares.
KEY CONTENDERS
Super Colerosa (Last 3 Beyers: 78-69-66)
◗ He was a $32,000 yearling purchase by the popular Bold Executive, a successful turf sire by Bold Ruckus, who was a leading Canadian sire.
“He’s been a good buy,” DePaulo said. “He’s a genuine racehorse. His mother is by Tale of the Cat, and the Storm Cats run on anything. In his second dam, there’s a graded stakes horse on the grass.”
Seffeara (Last 3 Beyers: 71-79-57)
◗ The 4 1/2-furlong Polytrack record holder was ineffective against older Ontario-sired runners most recently in the New Providence Stakes.
◗ The Old Forester gelding is a half-brother to Zazinga, who won last year’s La Prevoyante Stakes on the local course.
Jacks Escarpment (Last 3 Beyers: 36-86-76)
◗ Another speedy son of Old Forester, he captured his first two starts by a combined 11 lengths. He endured his first loss when second after setting rapid fractions in the six-furlong Woodstock Stakes on April 11.
◗ He was virtually eased after leading the way when favored in the seven-furlong Queenston Stakes on May 2. Trainer Nick Gonzalez has given him a little break leading up to this engagement.
Goodoldhockeygame (Last 3 Beyers: 75-60-68)
◗ The Queenston runner-up is another son of Old Forester, who has sired an excellent 16 percent first-time turf winners. His progeny have scored at a 12 percent clip overall on turf.
Checkered Past tries repeat
Checkered Past will try to win the 1 1/16-mile Trillium for the second year in a row for Sam-Son Farm and trainer Malcolm Pierce.
After notching her first stakes in the Trillium with a 91 Beyer, Checkered Past missed the second half of 2014. She wasn’t a factor in her two outings this year, but a start going short May 9 in the Grade 3 Hendrie Stakes, coupled with some interim works under Eurico Da Silva, should set her up nicely for the Trillium.
I’m a Kittyhawk, an upset winner of the six-furlong Ballade Stakes in her season debut, is stretching out to the distance of her victory in last year’s Algoma Stakes. Other contenders include Miss Mischief and Unspurned.
