Super Class primed for Marathon prep

Eduardo Caramori got his proverbial 15 minutes of racing fame 10 years ago when he ran a horse in the Kentucky Derby. First American, winner of the 1999 Flamingo Stakes, was never a factor when finishing 16th of 19 at 34-1.

Caramori wouldn't mind getting a few more minutes in the spotlight this fall, this time at the Breeders' Cup at Santa Anita. The Brazilian-born, Kentucky-based trainer has a couple of candidates for the BC Marathon in Alcomo and Super Class, with Super Class trying to earn his way to California by way of Turfway Park.

Super Class is one of eight entered Saturday in the 60th running of the Grade 3, $100,000 Turfway Park Fall Championship. The 1 1/2-mile Fall Championship, run over Polytrack at the Florence, Ky., track, is a Win and You're In event toward the $500,000 BC Marathon on Nov. 7.

Super Class, said Caramori, "is bred to go long."

"Both his sire and dam won at 1 1/2 miles or longer," he said. "This horse had some feet problems for a while, but now I have him right."

Super Class and Alcomo, winner of the Greenwood Cup at Philadelphia Park in July, are both owned by Abdul Rahman al Jasmi of Bahrain, who "wants to see one of them run in the Breeders' Cup," said Caramori. "My job is get one of them ready. I think Super Class likes the synthetics a little more."

Super Class, with Aldo Canchano to ride, could face his sternest challenges Saturday from Lord Kipling and Gangbuster.

Lord Kipling will be making a rare move indeed - turning back in distance to go 1 1/2 miles. Claimed from his last start on Aug. 12 by Scott Lake, Lord Kipling was a 7 1/2-length winner of that first-level optional $35,000 claimer at Saratoga at the rarely run distance of two miles.

Gangbuster, trained by Keith Desormeaux, will be looking to regain the form that took him to a 10 3/4-length romp in the Fort Harrod Stakes over the Keeneland Polytrack in April.

The rest of the field includes Dominican, whose upset of Street Sense in the 2007 Blue Grass Stakes remains his claim to fame; an uncoupled duo for Todd Pletcher, Nite Light and Alaazo; and a pair of outsiders, Ran Ran Ran and Eleuterio.
