Sunset Glow likely to race at Keeneland in Fall
DEL MAR, Calif. – Sunset Glow, who swept the two graded stakes for 2-year-old fillies at Del Mar this summer to emerge as a division leader, is likely to race at Keeneland in October.
Sunset Glow won the Grade 2 Sorrento Stakes over 6 1/2 furlongs Aug. 6 and the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante over seven furlongs Saturday. Her next race is likely to be the $400,000 Darley Alcibiades Stakes over 1 1/16 miles Oct. 4 at Keeneland, trainer Wesley Ward said.
Ward has horses based at Keeneland and is optimistic Sunset Glow will do well on that track’s new dirt surface, which was installed earlier this summer. The track was first used for training Thursday.
“I don’t think it will be a problem,” Ward said from Keeneland. “I’m excited about getting her back here. I think she’ll take to the dirt here.”
Sunset Glow has handled nearly everything else she has been asked to try in her career. Owned by Ten Broeck Farm, Sunset Glow has won 3 of 5 starts racing on four tracks in two countries.
After finishing second in a maiden race at Presque Isle Downs in May, Sunset Glow beat males in a maiden race on turf June 6 at Belmont Park and was second in the Group 2 Albany Stakes against fillies June 20 at Royal Ascot.
Sunset Glow won the Sorrento Stakes by 3 1/4 lengths and the Del Mar Debutante by a neck as the 4-5 favorite over the well-regarded Her Emmymency.
