Sunland Park track report

Rod Peck|Mar 20, 2003

SUNLAND PARK, N.M. - Seven Thoroughbreds and three Quarter Horses will line up in the 1,000-yard Mt. Cristo Rey Handicap at Sunland Park. The $75,000-added race is restricted to New Mexico-breds, and has attracted three horses who enter the race at a career peak.

Secret Frills, a 4-year-old Quarter Horse, has come into his own at this meet, reeling off three consecutive victories. The streak began Jan. 21 and came following a two-month break. Each of Secret Frills's wins have been at 870 yards and he has been timed in under 45 seconds each time.

Secret Frills, owned by Joe Alexander and trained by Ben Torres, breaks from post 2 and can be counted on to have the rail and the lead going into the turn. Edgar Ramirez has a return call.

B.G. Tiger is 4-year-old Thoroughbred who, like Secret Frills, ran the best races of his life this meet after having been given a vacation. He was freshened after racing at Ruidoso last summer. Trainer Todd Fincher brought B.G. Tiger back Dec. 21 and he easily won an allowance at 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:03.34. On Jan. 21, B.G. Tiger, owned by William and Martha Gallaway, blew away his competition while running six furlongs in 1:09.06. B.G. Tiger will break from post 8 and jockey Ricardo Jaime will need to use his speed to avoid being caught wide on the turn.

Five-year-old Thoroughbred Looks Bold is at the top of his career as well. Claiming master Henry Dominguez took Looks Bold for $7,500 for owners Carlos Guitierrez and Alfredo Alvarado on Dec. 10, ran him back for $10,000 Dec. 28 and scored an easy win. On Feb. 4 Looks Bold won a five-furlong allowance race in 56.66 seconds but was disqualified and placed seventh.

Looks Bold has a win and a second since then. He has drawn post 4 and will be sitting in good stalking position under Casey Lambert.
