Sunland Park: Rose’s Desert wins fourth straight in New Mexico Racing Commission

Rose’s Desert extended her win streak to four races on Sunday with a powerful off-the-pace score in the $110,000 New Mexico Racing Commission Handicap at Sunland Park. She won by 3 1/4 lengths over Dream Kin, and it was another 5 1/2 lengths back in third to Comicsperfectstorm, a stablemate to Rose’s Desert who was chasing her sixth straight win Sunday.

The Racing Commission, a six-furlong race for fillies and mares, was one of two New Mexico-bred stakes on the card. Desert Hennessy upset the $110,000 Johnie L. Jamison at 16-1.

Rose’s Desert ($4.80) was cutting back to one turn Sunday, and settled into sixth early as Comicsperfectstorm set a pressured pace of 22.19 seconds for the opening quarter and 44.58 for the half-mile. Rose Desert angled out in the stretch and covered the six furlongs for New Mexico-bred fillies and mares in 1:08.84.

Juan Ochoa was aboard Rose’s Desert, who was winning her second consecutive stakes following the $182,000 New Mexico Cup Filly and Mare Championship at Zia on Oct. 30. Prior to that race, she won a maiden special weight and first-level allowance, both at Zia.

Joe Peacock bred and owns Rose’s Desert, a 3-year-old daughter of Desert God trained by Todd Fincher. Rose’s Desert has now won 4 of 5 starts and $217,885.

Desert Hennessy ($35.80) stalked the pace set by Pure D Gold in the Johnie L. Jamison, then overtook that one in the stretch for a one-length win. Pure D Gold held second, finishing three-quarters of a length in front of third-place finisher Cross Chris Run.

Carlos Maderia rode the winner for Cleber Massey and trainer Joel Marr.

Desert Hennessy came into the Jamison, a 6 1/2-furlong race for 3-year-olds and up, off a win in the $152,000 New Mexico Cup for 3-year-olds at Zia on Oct. 30. He has now won 5 of 7 starts and $212,100.
