Sunland Derby set for March
The Grade 3, $800,000 Sunland Derby, which was not run this year due to an outbreak of equine herpesvirus at Sunland Park, will headline the New Mexico track’s stakes program during the meet that opens Dec. 16. The stakes schedule was announced Wednesday.
The Sunland Derby, at 1 1/8 miles, is set to share a card with the $250,000 Sunland Park Oaks at 1 1/16 miles March 26.
Sunland puts on a mixed meet for Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses.
The Sunland Derby was on the stakes schedule last meet, but when it was unable to be run, the $415,000 Sunland Park Festival of Racing Stakes was created to take its place.
