Saratoga | Race 7 | Post Time 4:35 p.m. (ET) Trainer Miguel Clement holds a strong hand in this Grade 2 Glens Falls, sending three of the eight runners. His strongest contender may be Bellezza (#6), who won the Grade 3 Sheepshead Bay in her North American debut back in May. She got a very good trip saving ground along the inside, but there was no pace ahead of her and she delivered a terrific stretch kick to pull clear late. That turn of foot was absent last time when she stepped up in the Grade 1 New York, but the yielding turf course may not have been to her liking. She handled this 12-furlong distance overseas, so I have few concerns about her stamina as she stretches back out. Stablemate La Mehana (#1) could be the main rival as she moves back up into stakes company after soundly defeating an allowance field last time. That was another race where they crawled up front before sprinting home, so she deserves plenty of credit for closing to victory into those fast closing splits. Gmax caught her running her final quarter in a blazing 22.17 seconds. The only knock against her is that hasn't always produced that late run, and was no match for Bellezza two back. The more interesting horse out of that June 27 allowance race might be Dazzlin' Dictator (#7). She never saw the rail that day, chasing outside without cover in a race where those who were successful stayed inside. She also didn't get the ideal trip two back when shuffled and encountering traffic at Churchill. She has to prove she belongs at this level, but should be a fair price. My top pick is Long Ago (#5), who looks like the potential controlling speed under Jose Ortiz. This mare didn't look like much when she first came to this country after some decent if unspectacular French form. However, she took a big step forward when she got on U.S. turf for the first time at Churchill Downs two back, leading from gate to wire over 11 furlongs. She beat a next-out winner that day, displaying a nice turn of foot when asked to finish. She got claimed out of that race by the dangerous William Morey, who stepped her up against stakes foes. She found herself chasing a much faster early pace over a shorter distance, but still hung in well even as the race was falling apart late. That 119 TimeformUS Speed Figure puts her on par with the favorites, and she may take another step forward stretching back out to this distance.
