Sunday Shoes rebounded from a poor performance at Woodbine by rallying to victory in the $80,000 Satin and Lace Stakes for female sprinters Monday at Presque Isle Downs. The Satin and Lace is the local prep for the Grade 2, $300,000 Presque Isle Downs Masters on Sept. 13 – a race that has been a productive prep over the years toward the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint, set for Nov. 2 at Del Mar. Sunday Shoes hugged the rail after breaking from that post and rated kindly early for Rafael Hernandez as Takemetothebeach was pressed by Implosion through the opening quarter in 22.18 seconds and half in 44.99 on the Tapeta. Making the turn for home, Sunday Shoes was sixth in the field of seven, but only a bit more than two lengths back. Hernandez angled her wide for a clear run, and she responded willingly. :: Get the Inside Track with the FREE DRF Morning Line Email Newsletter. The favorite shook clear, but she was unable to withstand the charge of Sunday Shoes, who drove by her in the final yards and won by a widening length. The time was 1:08.47 for the six furlongs on the Tapeta. After Queen of the Mud in second, it was 1 1/4 lengths to Miss Betty, who edged Baby No Worries by a half-length for third. They were followed by Takemetothebeach, Implosion, and Hideki. The Satin and Lace victory was the fourth from six career starts for Sunday Shoes, who is trained by Wesley Ward for Lael Stables. It also was her second stakes win on a synthetic track, to go along with the 2023 Serena's Song Stakes at Turfway Park. The filly has only been worse than second once in her career – that coming last time out when she finished a fading 11th in the Grade 3 Whimsical Stakes in May at Woodbine. She emerged from that effort in solid shape, with a pair of bullet works on the Saratoga turf in preparation for her victorious return Monday evening. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
