Sun Goddess extends win streak in Cheveley Park Stakes

The Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf on Oct. 30 at Keeneland may have its favorite in Sun Goddess, who won her fifth consecutive start, and third straight Group 1 stakes, in Saturday’s $363,800 Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket Racecourse in England.

Sun Goddess, who paid $3.20 in American pools, stalked the leaders to the final sixteenth of the six-furlong race and won by a length over 5-1 Libertango. Alwaysanangel (7-1) finished third, beaten 2 1/2 lengths.

Sun Goddess was ridden by Ryan Moore for trainer Aidan O’Brien. By Sioux Nation, Sun Goddess won the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes at six furlongs against colts at The Curragh in Ireland in August and the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes against fillies at seven furlongs there Sept. 13.

The Cheveley Park Stakes was run on good-to-firm turf. Sun Goddess won the Moyglare Stud Stakes on yielding turf.

“It was some change today,” O’Brien told the press in reference to the different turf courses. “It was a massive test, and she’s passed it.

“She looks a freak, doesn’t she, to be doing what she is doing and you have to remember she’s a 2-year-old filly racing at the top level every day. It’s incredible, and I can’t remember having one that classy, with that speed and distance range before. She looks really unusual.”

The BC Juvenile Fillies Turf is run at a mile and would be a new distance for Sun Goddess, who races for the Coolmore syndicate and Georg Von Opel.

Libertango is a candidate for the BC Juvenile Turf Sprint, trainer George Boughey said Saturday.

The Moore-O’Brien tandem struck earlier on the program when Haffner won the Group 2 Royal Lodge Stakes at seven furlongs in a prep for the BC Juvenile Turf on Oct. 30.

Haffner ($5) won the $165,300 Royal Lodge Stakes by 1 1/4 lengths over 5-1 Burning Up. Quicken Away (9-2) was third in the field of seven, beaten 2 1/2 lengths.

Haffner, a Kentucky-bred colt by Justify, was purchased for $375,000 at the 2025 Keeneland September yearling sale.

The win in the Royal Lodge was a turnaround from a seventh-place finish in a field of eight in the Group 1 National Stakes at The Curragh on Sept. 13 on a yielding turf course that O’Brien said recently did not suit the colt.

Haffner holds a fees-paid berth to the BC Juvenile Turf courtesy of a win in the Group 3 Acomb Stakes at York Racecourse in England on Aug. 19.

The Royal Lodge Stakes was Haffner’s third win in six starts. He races for the Coolmore syndicate, Peter Brant, and Brook Smith.

The BC Juvenile Turf Sprint is likely to include Orthodox, who won the first Group 1 of his career in the $363,800 Middle Park Stakes for colts at six furlongs.

Ridden by Rossa Ryan for Clive Cox, Orthodox ($8.20) caught pacesetter Force Noir (30-1) near the finish to beat that rival by a neck. Hell of a Spin (30-1) finished third by 1 1/4 lengths in a field of six.

Orthodox, by Havana Grey, has won 3 of 4 starts, including the Group 2 Norfolk Stakes by 3 1/2 lengths against 20 rivals at five furlongs at Royal Ascot on good-to-firm turf June 20. Orthodox was sixth on soft turf in the Group 1 Prix Morny at Deauville, France, on Aug. 23.

Cox said after the Middle Park Stakes that Orthodox is best-suited to sprints. Orthodox, owned by Jason Goddard, secured a fees-paid berth to the BC Juvenile Turf Sprint through his win in the Norfolk Stakes.
