Summit Point, Tango Run, Best of You meet again in Miss Ohio
Summit Point, Tango Run, and Best of You, who have already squared off in short but busy careers, will seek “Miss Ohio” honors Saturday at Thistledown.
The 5 1/2-furlong, $75,000 Miss Ohio Stakes is for Ohio-registered 2-year-old fillies.
Tango Run earned the top Beyer Speed Figure in the field when romping in her career debut. The filly recovered from a slow start to roll by 6 1/2 lengths at 5 1/2 furlongs in June at Thistledown. The William Cowans trainee retains jockey Rex Stokes III on Saturday.
Summit Point races as a homebred for Eclipse Award-winning breeder WinStar Farm and trainer Tim Hamm’s Blazing Meadows Farm, which also have two of Ohio’s top 2-year-old males, Candy Exchange and Awaken. This filly hinted at potential when finishing second to Tango Run. She bounced back for a wire-to-wire victory in a 5 1/2-furlong maiden race this month at Thistledown, finishing full of run to win by 4 3/4 lengths. She is ideally drawn for a similar trip in the rail position under Agustin Bracho.
Best of You is still a maiden after three starts for the powerful team of Mast Thoroughbreds and trainer Robert Gorham but has acquitted herself well against the favorites. The filly recovered from a bobbling start to cross the line third in Tango Run’s debut but was disqualified and placed fourth for interference. She then was a rallying second behind Summit Point last out.
The maidens Count de Loot, Circus Rings, and G’s Ship Load complete the field. Count de Loot was elevated to third in Tango Run’s maiden with Best of You’s disqualification. Circus Rings made her only start in the $75,000 Hoover Stakes against males, finishing fifth as Candy Exchange and Awaken swept the top two placings.
