Summertime Magic leads Casse sweep in Ruling Angel Stakes

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Trainer Mark Casse swept the top three positions in Saturday’s $100,000 Ruling Angel Stakes at Woodbine, with front-running Summertime Magic prevailing over the favored Mrs. Barbara and Join the Dance.
Summertime Magic went straight to the front under Patrick Husbands and set moderate fractions in the seven-furlong sprint for 3-year-old fillies.

Mrs. Barbara, last year’s Canadian champion 2-year-old filly, made her way through traffic and closed furiously along the rail in the final furlong, but came up 1 1/4 lengths shy of Summertime Magic, who won in a posted time of 1:22.26.
Join the Dance finished another neck back in third, and was followed by Outfoxed, Guileful and Urban.
“I wanted to take advantage of my horse having more speed than [Join the Dance], and then go from there,” Husbands said. “She was going very easy down the back. She was rolling with her ears pricked, showing me that she was just happy. When they came to me on the turn, I hadn’t really asked her yet. Coming off the turn, she showed me they were going to have to run to beat her.”
Summertime Magic paid $11.90. The unbeaten daughter of Carpe Diem earned $60,000 for owner John Oxley.
