Summerland remains unbeaten in Canada
RACE REPLAY IS NOT AVAILABLESummerland remained undefeated in Canada with a convincing win in the $75,000 Freedom of the City at Century Downs on Saturday. She paid $2.70 for her three-length win over Im Evin Im Leavin.
With Richard Hamel riding her for the first time, Summerland broke sharply in the 71/2-furlong race for 2-year-old fillies. She held a short lead over Im Evin Im Leavin and Notice while posting a half-mile time of 45.67 seconds. Notice dropped back on the turn with Summerland and Im Evin Im Leavin dueling until Summerland asserted her authority midstretch. Notice held on to finish third.
The final time was 1:30.80.
It was Summerland’s fifth win with her only loss coming in the Grade 2 Sorrento at Del Mar won by Bellafina, who is the early favorite for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies.
The daughter of He’s Tops was bred in Kentucky by George Gilbert and Tres Hombres. She is owned by George Gilbert.
