Summer Sunday wins Fury Stakes despite drifting out

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Despite drifting out dramatically through the stretch, the favored Summer Sunday got the job done in Sunday’s $125,000 Fury Stakes at Woodbine.
Summer Sunday ($4.20) shook loose early before Queen’s Fate joined her up front on the turn in the seven-furlong prep for the Woodbine Oaks.
Summer Sunday began to get out inside the quarter pole while maintaining the lead. She finished in the middle of the track, 1 3/4 lengths clear of Glamanation. Avie’s Mineshaft closed inside to finish another neck back in third in the six-horse field of Canadian-bred 3-year-old fillies.
Rafael Hernandez got a leg up from trainer Stuart Simon on Summer Sunday, a daughter of Silent Name who covered the distance in 1:24.17.
“She broke right on top, and we weren’t going to take her back,” Simon said. “She started to get out but still won it. If she went straight, she should have won easier.”
The Fury was the fourth victory in five starts for Summer Sunday, who banked $75,000 for owners Anne and William Scott.
