Summer Sunday shows her class in Zadracarta, gets back in the win column
ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Summer Sunday ($10) outclassed her seven rivals in Friday’s $100,000 Zadracarta Stakes at Woodbine, scoring over favored Spanish Ballerina in the five-furlong inner turf dash for Ontario-bred females.
Canada’s champion female sprinter in 2019, Summer Sunday stalked the leaders while three wide on the turn, and then wore down pacesetter Spanish Ballerina to prevail by a length, in a time of 56.95 seconds.
Rafael Hernandez got a leg up from trainer Stuart Simon on Summer Sunday, who registered her first win of the meet after ending up sixth in the Grade 3 Whimsical and second in the restricted Ballade Stakes.
“She got beat in her first two starts this year, and once was probably my fault,” Simon said. “I think last time the racetrack wasn’t to her liking. Raffie gave her a perfect trip today - just tracked the speed. She showed her class through the lane.”
A 6-year-old Silent Name mare, Summer Sunday earned $60,000 for owners Ann and William Scott.
She’s a Dream came from fifth to finish a neck behind the runner-up in third. She was followed by Sav, Hell N Wild, Millennium Force, Fact Checking, and Amalfi Sky. Sterling Speed was scratched after acting up in the gate.
