Summer Starlet, the impressive winner of the Grade 1 Spinaway Stakes at Saratoga, will miss the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies on Oct. 30 due to inflammation in a tendon in a hind leg, trainer Steve Asmussen said Friday.
The inflammation came as a result of Summer Starlet being stepped on from behind by Oh She Said Yes during the running of the Grade 1 Alcibiades at Keeneland on Oct. 2.
Asmussen said Summer Starlet would get 90 days off before being re-evaluated.
“She needs to be treated and obviously stopped on for a period of time and we will do everything that’s in the best interest of her realizing she’s beyond a very special talent and we’ll do everything right to get her back to 100 percent,” Asmussen said.
Asmussen trains Summer Starlet, a daughter of City of Light, for a partnership that includes BC Stables, Wattswood Stables, Bob Albritton, Jay Graham, and David Baggett.
“They’re naturally disappointed but 100 percent behind doing exactly what she needs,” Asmussen said.
Summer Starlet announced her presence with a dazzling 6 1/2-length debut victory going 6 1/2 furlongs on the Aug. 8 Whitney Day program at Saratoga. Summer Starlet came back four weeks later to impress again, winning the Spinaway by 4 3/4 lengths over Schuylerville winner Harper’s Corner.
Despite being run up from behind in the Alcibiades, Summer Starlet was only beaten 1 1/4 lengths by Emphatic while finishing 17 1/2 lengths clear of third-place finisher Oh She Said Yes.
