Sugar Swirl wires Princess Elizabeth

Sugar Swirl led throughout Saturday's $251,600 Princess Elizabeth Stakes at Woodbine to score a 1 1/4-length victory over Kimchi.

Sugar Swirl set honest fractions and had a clear lead over a track labeled good, as both Kimchi and Classical Miss loomed into contention on the far turn. Sugar Swirl held Kimchi at bay through the stretch, completing 1 1/16 miles in 1:50. Classical Miss finished third in the nine-horse field of 2-year-old Canadian-bred fillies.

"It was a very tough track today," said Todd Kabel, who rode Sugar Swirl for trainer Bobby Frankel. "It was very tiring, but she ran well through it."

Sugar Swirl returned $3.60 as the favorite and earned $150,000 in her first stakes tally for Stronach Stable. Kabel and Stronach won the 1998 Princess Elizabeth with Bag Lady Jane.
