ALTOONA, Iowa – The $100,000 Saylorville Stakes, a six-furlong sprint for fillies and mares, drew 10 capable runners and is the most competitive of Friday’s trio of stakes at Prairie Meadows. Headed by the classy Iowa-owned Sugar Shock, the Saylorville is a difficult puzzle to solve as it features a blend of reformed route horses and several dyed-in-the-wool sprinters. Sugar Shock is trained by Doug Anderson, who is enjoying a 15-for-48 meet here, and owned by On Cloud Nine LLC, a group of local racing enthusiasts headed by Aaron Kennedy. The 4-year-old Sugar Shock is a multiple Grade 3 winner who has done her best work at Oaklawn Park. Victorious in Oaklawn’s 2014 editions of the Honeybee and Fantasy stakes, the Arkansas track’s top races for 3-year-old fillies, Sugar Shock was an 11-1 fifth choice in last year’s Kentucky Oaks. After setting the pace for six furlongs, she tired to finish eighth behind Untapable. At Prairie Meadows, Sugar Shock won the 2014 Panthers Stakes before failing to handle a sloppy surface when eased in last June’s Iowa Oaks. In her first crack at sprinting in more than 11 months, she closed ground determinedly for a promising half-length tally in the $100,000 American Beauty Stakes at Oaklawn on Jan. 24. Sugar Shock’s opposition on Friday includes the reliable Oklahoma-bred sprint specialist Heykittykittykitty and the lightly raced Yucca. Heykittykittykitty, trained by Ron Moquett, proved her mettle when staying on well for second, 1 1/2 lengths behind Street Story, in the Grade 3 Winning Colors at Churchill Downs on May 25. :: Bet Prairie Meadows with DRF Bets.
