Suffolk: Southoftheborder seeks elusive sprint win in Isadorable

Rowland Hoyt|Aug 02, 2012

Southoftheborder makes another attempt at an elusive first sprint win when she runs in the $50,000 Isadorable Stakes at Suffolk Downs.

A homebred for owner and trainer Lloyd Lockhart, Southoftheborder has not been without stakes successes, winning the two-turn First Episode Stakes twice, but she is 0 for 16 at the six-furlong distance of the Isadorable. Over 50 career starts, Southoftheborder has usually run out of time in sprints, but this year’s contest offers a great chance under jockey Jorge L. Vargas.

Tally’s Sundance, another statebred regular, might have just enough tactical ability to foil Southoftheborder. The winner of the Last Dance last year, Tally’s Sundance spent most of her recent campaigns making closing moves around two turns. But in her first start this year, a six-furlong race July 14, she broke well, settled back, and rushed to miss the region’s top female, Surely Irish, by a head under jockey Dyn Panell.

Past stakes winners Sociano’s Legacy, Never Know, and Dreamed a Dream each attempt to improve on recent form by returning to the statebred ranks. Sociano’s Legacy beat several of these in the Louise Kimball Stakes last September as a 3-year-old, but she has disappointed in two open allowance races against Surely Irish this season.

Never Know, the winner of the 2009 Norman Hall and 2010 John Kirby, finished fifth in those allowance races.

Dreamed a Dream ran away with last year’s Norman Hall in her career debut but has been outrun in two subsequent races. Her team of trainer Bobby Raymond and jockey Jill Jellison won four races together Wednesday.
