EAST BOSTON, MASS. – Roode Dude will attempt to become the first two-time stakes winner at Suffolk Downs during the meet when he takes on seven other Massachuestts-bred 3-year-olds in Saturday’s $30,000 John Kirby Stakes. “He’s coming up to the race super. He’s always anxious to go,” said trainer Adel Salim about Roode Dude, a homebred son of 2007 New England horse of the year De Roode Roode Dude is his sire’s first foal, first starter, and first winner, and he also became De Roode’s first stakes winner when the 3-year-old gelding captured the six-furlong African Prince Stakes by 3 1/4 lengths in his last start here Sept. 21. On Saturday, he’s being asked to go around two turns for the first time. “The mile and 70 yards should be no problem for him,” said Salim, who won the Rise Jim Stakes earlier in the season with Silk Spinner, a half-brother to Roode Dude. “This horse is bred to handle distance. Hopefully, we can have a nice trip because there are a couple of maidens in there, so the trip will be very important.” Jacqueline Davis, who has been aboard for all of Roode Dude’s seven starts except his first, gets the return call and will be part of the 121-pound impost when they break from the outside post. “Having Jackie back is great. She knows when to move with him and when to back off. She really knows this horse,” Salim said. Worth The Worry and Grady, who ran second and third to Roode Dude in the African Prince, are back hoping to turn the tables this time. Grady is trained by John Rigattieri and will be ridden by Dyn Panell. They are the leading trainer and jockey combination at Suffolk Downs. Im Kwik, Abandonedandbroke, The Lion’s Fire, My Friend Bob, and Shelly’s Cider, who is the lone filly in the field, complete the lineup.
