Suedois scratched from Breeders' Cup Mile with foot infection

ARCADIA, Calif. – Suedois was scratched from the Breeders’ Cup Mile on Saturday morning because of a foot problem. Trainer David O’Meara said Suedois had developed a minor infection in his hoof that would prevent him from competing.
“There’s nothing much to it at all,” O’Meara said. “If the race had been tomorrow, he’d have been fine. It was just a question of timing.”
Caribou Club is the first also-eligible in the race but didn’t ship to Santa Anita, so Next Shares, based here with trainer Richard Baltas, will draw into the race. Suedois had drawn the rail post for the Mile. O’Meara still has Lord Glitters, winner of the Queen Anne Stakes, in the Mile.
This is the second time Suedois has traveled from England to Santa Anita only to be scratched from a Breeders’ Cup race. In 2016 he was here to contest the Turf Sprint but was injured the week of the race. Suedois did finish a close fourth in the 2017 BC Mile at Del Mar following a win in the Grade 1 Shadwell Turf Mile, and was coming into Saturday’s start following a close, closing third in the most recent edition of the Shadwell. He arrived here at Santa Anita early Sunday morning with the large shipment of overseas horses from England, Ireland, and France.
